Staying cozy and energized during winter can be hard for all of us, even your horses. Feeding them becomes a challenge, and the cold weather can affect their health and well-being.
If you’re trying to keep your beloved animals safe and sound during the frigid winter months, here are our best tips to make the job a lot easier for you.
Adjust and increase their diet
As the grass outside gets covered in thick layers of snow or stops growing during the winter months, your horse’s sustenance options decrease significantly. They can no longer graze outside and might become weak due to a lack of sufficient food.
To ensure your stallion gets all the nutrients they need to stay healthy, adjust their feeding accordingly; increase the quantity of hay and grains you provide them.
Keep your horse hydrated
Hay is generally drier than grass, and it affects their digestive systems. Ensure it has access to water and doesn’t suffer from dehydration or impaction colic.
Provide clean and safe shelter to your horse
Depending on your horse’s hair coat, it might be comfortable with low temperatures. But keeping it out there without proper shelter and security might be dangerous.
If you don’t have a barn or shed, bring them to our horse boarding facility for safe and supervised keeping or keep them near some trees.

Maintain their workout and exercise schedule
As a natural grazing athlete, your horse needs to exercise to maintain its health. You might think keeping them confined might help during the winter months, but you’re only going to weaken their leg muscles and reduce their endurance and stamina.
Allow your horse to be free and take them out for walks as often as you can. But be sure to avoid walking them in heavy snow areas as that might injure your animal.
Trim and take care of their hooves
Horse hooves grow slower during the winter months, but they still need regular care and trimming. They should be cut every 6-8 weeks to prevent any damage. Additionally, be sure to eliminate any dirt, debris, and rocks that might be stuck in there.
